Arsenal v Leeds LIVE: Bruno Guimaraes stunner earns champions hard-fought Premier League win

Can Arsenal bounce back from defeat to Brighton against high-flying Leeds?

(PA)

Arsenal fought back from behind to secure a hard-earned win over Leeds United on their Premier League return.

After an extended international break, Mikel Arteta’s side struggled to find fluency against the impressive visitors, and looked like they might slip to a second successive defeat when James Justin fired Leeds into a deserved second-half lead. But Riccardo Calafiori soon levelled affairs, before Bruno Guimaraes finished off a stunning team goal to take the three points.

Guimaraes had been used off the bench in an illustration of the squad depth available to Arteta, overseeing his first game since signing a new contract at the club. Victory leaves the champions level on points with Manchester City, who play on Sunday, at the top of the table – although it remains to be seen what punishment their title rivals could face after the seismic verdict.

The Bruno Guimaraes moment that showed why Arsenal remain Premier League favourites

Arsenal struck twice in eight second-half minutes to secure a comeback 2-1 win against Leeds at the Emirates Stadium and move level on points with Manchester City at the Premier League summit.

After a thumping 3-0 defeat at Brighton before the international break, Mikel Arteta’s side were staring at a second shock loss in as many matches after James Justin fired the visitors ahead with 55 minutes gone.

However, Riccardo Calafiori drew the champions level when he converted Ben White’s header from close range in the 62nd minute, before substitute Bruno Guimaraes struck the decisive blow just six minutes after he came off the bench.

Mikel Arteta offers his thoughts

“Before the game, we talked about two things: the challenge ahead, and to restore our identity and be ourselves again,” the Arsenal boss says. “We weren’t pleased with what we did against Brighton, and today was a chance to put that right. We reacted in the manner we expected.

“They are extremely well organised, very physical, committed in everything they do. They are a threat. You keep fouling them or give them throw-ins and set-pieces, they are incredible with the way they attack the box. They could have punished us in the first half. This is a testament to the league.

“When you play 12.30 at home and go 1-0 down, you have to restore a lot of things. The energy is one of them. We had an incredible response. It made a difference to help us win the game.”

And here is Bruno Guimaraes speaking to TNT Sports

“I feel unbelievable. Against Brighton, we were not at the right level and today the mentality was mostly back. An important goal, three important points, I’m very happy.

“It’s a great feeling. It’s important that when I am on the pitch I give my best and a bit of a headache for the manager. Three points is always welcome.

“It’s a new challenge for me. For me, the most important thing for Bruno is to go on the pitch and play my football.”

FT: Arsenal 2-1 Leeds

A hard-fought success for Arsenal, but three points nonetheless. Below their best for an hour, Mikel Arteta’s side lifted their level to come from behind after James Justin’s opener – and it obviously helps to have players of Bruno Guimaraes’ quality to come on.

Here is that lovely winner:

FULL TIME! Arsenal 2-1 Leeds

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 90 + 5 minutes

It should have been three! Bukayo Saka is sprung by Viktor Gyokeres, but can’t beat James Trafford in the one-on-one situation. He seemed a touch hesitant, oddly, and Trafford palms it away.

Still, that’ll be that!

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 90 + 4 minutes

Leeds throw bodies forward and the ball follows them via Ethan Ampadu’s long hurl from the touchline. Arsenal have it well marshalled.

Why has Viktor Gyokeres not hit it? James Trafford gets himself in a right mess 35 yards from goal, leaving it agape as Gyokeres dispossesses him. The striker appears to open up the angle for a shot, but chooses not to, twisting and turning unnecessarily before eventually running aground.

Curious. That’s the sort of opportunity forwards usually gobble up.

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 90 minutes

The last Arsenal change is another sign of their depth: World Cup winner Mikel Merino replaces Martin Odegaard.

Five more minutes between them and victory.

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 89 minutes

Ah, a chance for Leeds passed up. Dominic Calvert-Lewin latches on to a long hoist, though can’t quite find Brenden Aaronson on the follow-up. Perhaps a vital touch from an Arsenal defender before it reached him?
