Jurgen Klopp agrees return to management with new job set after World Cup drama
The German is set to return to football two years after leaving Liverpool
Jürgen Klopp has reached an agreement with the German football federation to take over as the national team manager. The former Liverpool boss will replace Julian Nagelsmann, who left his position following Germany's exit from the World Cup.
The Germans were beaten in the round of 32 stage by Paraguay on a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw. Nagelsmann then stepped down from his position following the shock defeat.
The DFB have now confirmed to Sky Germany that an agreement was reached with Klopp. “DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and DFB Vice-President Hans-Joachim Watzke held a first intensive meeting with Jürgen Klopp in New York yesterday regarding the possible appointment as Germany head coach," they said.

"During the constructive talks, an understanding was reached on the key elements of a potential contract. The talks will continue next week. Both sides are confident that the negotiations – subject to an agreement with Klopp’s current employer Red Bull - can ultimately be concluded successfully.“
If Klopp does become the new Germany manager, as expected, then it will be his first management job since leaving Liverpool in the summer of 2024. He is currently head of global soccer with Red Bull, a role he has held since January 2025.
Speaking last week, Klopp said that he doesn't expect Red Bull to stand in his way of taking the Germany job. Speaking on Magenta, where he has been working as an analyst for the World Cup, he said: “Yes, I can confirm the talks.
"Things moved pretty quickly. Julian stepped down. The DFB (German FA) are looking for a successor. And they’re talking to me.
“What needs to happen now? Time. I’m under contract with Red Bull. I’ve said I’m interested in the talks. They will be intensive because this isn’t only about Julian Nagelsmann.
"I have an existing contract with Red Bull. I've said many times how much I enjoy this job. As a person, I usually honour contracts. But I've also made it clear that I'm interested in talks with the DFB.
“I also have to speak with (Red Bull CEO) Oliver Mintzlaff. He’s my employer. We’ve already touched on a few things. I assume he won’t stand in the way. I’ve been there for 19 months. It was an intense time.
“I’m ready. Once the talks begin, your mind starts racing. We have to change things fundamentally.
"There will have to be intensive discussions, because, of course, the problems we currently have cannot be pinned only on Julian Nagelsmann.
"Julian is an exceptional coach, and he will be able to prove that time and again throughout his coaching career."
Klopp spent nine years with Liverpool, leading the club to victory in the Champions League, as well as lifting the Premier League title, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
