Liverpool's pre-season programme under Andoni Iraola will take a step up in intensity on Tuesday when many of the squad report back for duty.

So far, the new Reds boss has been catching up with a plethora of players making their respective recoveries from injury while also running the rule over a clutch of talented Academy players at the AXA Training Centre.

Iraola will meet the media for the first time on Monday morning at the club's Kirkby base with a press conference slated for 11am.

Before then, however, the ECHO brings you all the latest tidbits in the weekly Liverpool Notebook's latest edition.

Iraola to face the media

Liverpool's new head coach Andoni Iraola will face the media for the first time on Monday morning, with an 11am press conference pencilled in at the AXA Training Centre.

Two years ago, when Arne Slot was rolled out to the world's press, he was flanked by new sporting director Richard Hughes as the club looked to communicate the feel of a fresh start, post-Jurgen Klopp.

It is unlikely, however, that Iraola will be joined by Hughes this time around as speculation over his own future goes on.

Hughes is expected to leave for Al Hilal after the summer transfer window and with Fenway Sports Group's CEO of football, Michael Edwards, having officially confirmed his departure on Friday, Iraola may be faced with some questions that he might not have the answers to.

It might be appear unfair to ask Iraola questions about Hughes' future as sporting director and the outgoing Edwards' decision to leave - but in lieu of appearances from both of those executives themselves, it falls on the head coach to attempt to offer some clarity.

There will be a lot to discuss from 11am Monday morning.

Iraola runs the rule

New boss Iraola was at training earlier this week to keep a close eye on the talent that populates the Under-18s and U21s sides alongside Academy director Alex Inglethorpe, sporting director Richard Hughes and 21s boss Rob Page.

In terms of the club's football leadership group, it was a who's who and it surely led to an increase in output from the young players involved, which included two 15-year-olds in Joshua Abe and Luca Eden.

Abe, having signed a new deal earlier this summer to keep out of the clutches of the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, is expected to be part of the tour of the United States and the club have high hopes, long term, for the left-footed, right-sided winger.

He has been given the squad No.40, despite his fledgling years, and while a step up to the first time might be a bridge too far this year, there are certainly plans in place to maximise his talent.

Fifteen-year-old midfielder Eden is another who the Academy staff think has a bright future and he will no doubt have been playing to catch Iraola's eye as the new boss finalises his squad list for the Stateside tour.

Liverpool fly to Chicago on July 20 and will be based in Illinois throughout, flying into Nashville and New York for their pre-season friendlies. While the bulk of the squad will have already been decided, Thursday's training session will have been extra intense if there were still one or two places on the plane up for grabs.

Barnes: Elliott returns as a squad player

John Barnes believes the returning Harvey Elliott will find it tough to become a first-team regular under Andoni Iraola this coming campaign.

Elliott is back training with his parent club after a stint at Aston Villa on loan that saw the midfielder pushed to the fringes after sporting director Monchi left just weeks after arranging the deal with the Reds.

Villa agreed to pay £35m if Elliott made 10 appearances and with Morgan Rogers, Emi Buendia and Ross Barkley all ahead of him under Unai Emery in a squad that won the Europa League and finished fourth in the Premier League, the on-loan Liverpool man barely featured.

Villa were acutely aware of their PSR situation, meaning Elliott became a victim of that predicament, with it being deemed not prudent to trigger the clause for someone who played in an area where they were well stocked.

Now back at Anfield, Barnes thinks it will be difficult for the 23-year-old to break into the side under Iraola this coming campaign but thinks he could be a valuable player as a member of the wider squad.

“He’ll be given a second chance to be a squad player as that’s what he’s been," Barnes told Betfred.

"If he decides that he wants to be a squad player for Liverpool and not play every week, then that’s fine, but I don’t believe he would come back and break into the starting eleven under Andoni Iraola.

"I’d like to see him back because he’s a good squad player and is somebody that won’t let you down, but if he wants to play every week, then Liverpool’s not the place for him to do that.”

Simon on his Liverpool regret

Former Liverpool transfer target Moses Simon has opened up on his regret at not moving to Anfield in 2018.

Then aged 22, Simon was on the Reds' radar as they continued their recruitment drive and was rated at around £10m by Belgian side Gent.

However, Simon stayed in Belgium and Liverpool eventually signed Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City in a £12m deal.

Speaking on Urban Dwell Sport, Simon said: “From 2016 to 2018, I dropped in form because I wanted to make a transfer.

“Liverpool wanted to sign me, I think Hull City, Fulham, Brighton, Tottenham, and Lyon also. We played against them in the Europa League in 2017.

“But, you know, when you read all this in the newspapers, some are true while some are rumours. So the first year, I didn’t make it. I didn’t get a transfer. The second year, I was supposed to go to Liverpool. It didn’t work.

“In my head, I was like: ‘Is it the agent or the club? I don’t want to play.’ So I was putting it in my head: ‘Whether I play or I don’t play, I don’t care. I think if I don't play, the club will find a way quickly to sell me'.

“The club bought me for €1million, but after one year, they wanted €25million.”

Moses added: “If I was an experienced player, I would push for everything because the more you play, the more market value you have.

“So every young player out there, whether there’s a rumour or no rumour, just give everything.

“A transfer can come, and you go. If it doesn't come, continue because your club is paying you. This is the contract you signed."

Valero exit confirmed

Liverpool are on the lookout for a new first-team goalkeeping coach after it was confirmed Xavi Valero had left the club.

Valero returned to the Reds last year having previously been on the coaching staff under Rafael Benitez in the mid-2000s.

It's understood Colin Stewart, the goalkeeper development and pathway lead, will take on the role until a new appointment is made.
